Meridian says goodbye to pre-authorisation across Zero EV charging network

We’ve got some electrifying news…pre-authorisation is officially gone from Zero EV charging!

From now on, you’ll only be charged for the energy you use, with no temporary $30 hold applied to your payment card.

What is a pre-authorisation hold?

Pre-authorisation is a temporary hold placed on your card at the start of a charging session. It ensures there are sufficient funds available for the charge. Once the session ends and the final cost is confirmed, any unused amount is released back to your payment card. Depending on your bank, this can take a few days.

Why is there no longer a pre-authorisation hold on my card?

We’ve removed pre-authorisation from Zero EV charging. Now, you’ll only be charged for the energy you use, no temporary holds and no waiting for refunds.

Why are you removing pre-authorisation?

We’re making this change to improve your charging experience. Many customers told us the temporary holds were frustrating, especially when refunds were delayed or the amount they were charged seemed incorrect.

By removing this, we’re making Zero easier to use!

Why was I charged more than $30 for my charging session?

Previously, a $20 or $30 pre-authorisation was placed on your card, but it didn’t reflect the actual cost of your session. Now, you’ll be billed directly for the energy you use – which may be more than $30 depending on how much you charge.

What happens if my payment fails?

If a payment fails, your Zero account will be automatically blocked. You won’t be able to start a new charging session until the outstanding invoice is paid. You can make payments via credit or debit card in the Zero app.

Do I need to do anything?

There's nothing you need to do! Your billing will continue as normal, just enjoy the simpler charging experience.
